Dr. Abida Raza is a leading Nanomedicine Research Group at NILOP Nanomedicine Research Labs (NNRL) since May 2016, affiliated with the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Science (PIEAS) Islamabad. Her research interest lies in the development of metal and polymeric based nanoformulations and multifunctional nano theranostics systems. Anticancer drugs that have a narrow therapeutic window and are dosed at or close to the maximum tolerated dose, wide variability in the bioavailability can have a negative impact on treatment outcome. Nanoparticles, because of their small size and unique physical characteristics, may provide opportunities to bypass these shortcomings and improve the bioavailability of anticancer drugs. Of special interest is nano-theranostics, using external stimuli of laser and focused ultrasound exposure to improve the delivery of NPs at the tumor site for improved therapeutic efficacy and its potential in-vivo testing for therapeutic and diagnostics simultaneously. Previous interests were in molecular diagnostics especially infectious diseases. She promoted research in line with regional demands and established research facilities and infrastructures. She has been the winner of several National and International grants including the Pak-Norway FICP grant, COMSTECH TWAS, Pakistan Academy of Sciences, and Pakistan Science Foundation. This has helped the Institute to build research facilities. |
