Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all spheres of social life, including education. In this context, the present research aimed to analyze the association between individual resilience and manifestations of stress in students of the Specialized University of the Americas, Extension of Chiriquí, during this period. For this, a non-experimental, cross-sectional design with a correlational and descriptive scope was used. The participants were 491 undergraduate students studying during the second academic semester 2020 at the Specialized University of the Americas, Chiriquí Extension. As research instruments, the Resilience Scale of Wagnild and Young (1993) and the Questionnaire of Manifestations of Stress of Gutiérrez, Arauz and Álvarez (2019) were used. The results showed the existence of a significant number of students with low levels of resilience and high levels of stress. In addition, the research hypothesis was corroborated with which it was concluded that the greater the resilience, the lower the stress levels in the student population. The findings of this study suggest the relevance of some of the changes undertaken to date by the educational institution and point in favor of the timely detection of vulnerable groups of the student body in which support and accompaniment actions could be prioritized to favor their mental health and avoid the possibility of desertion.
