Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot infection is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by the local findings of a site of inflammation or purulence (sometimes with a systemic appearance of sepsis) that occurs in an individual at places below the malleolus with diabetes mellitus. Methicillin antibiotic has been introduced in clinical settings to prevent disease caused by penicillin resistant Staphylococcus species.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in diabetic foot infections.
METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted in the in the Department of Medicine, Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar from (13-01-2017 to 12-01-2018). It had a descriptive cross sectional study design and patients presenting with diabetic foot ulcers were recruited in this study through consecutive sampling and then subjected to detection of MRSA.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 42.2±8.3 years. We had 51.4% males & 48.6% females in. MRSA was detected in 23.6% of diabetic feet.
CONCLUSION: MRSA is quite prevalent in our local population with diabetes mellitus and we suggest focusing more research on these risk factors to take potential preventative measures.
KEY WORDS: Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetic Foot, Staphylococcus Aureus, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
