Frequency of malignancy in patients presented with parotid swelling
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The study was done to determine the frequency of malignancy in patients presented with parotid swelling.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of malignancy in patients presenting with parotid swelling at tertiary care hospital Peshawar.
METHODOLOGY: It was a cross-sectional descriptive study in which 174 patients with parotid swelling were screened for parotid malignancy. The duration of the study was 6 months from 25/11/2015 to 25/4/2016. Non- probability consecutive sampling technique was used.
RESULTS: Our study shows that among 174 patients 5% patients were in age range 18-30 years, 23% patients were in age range 31-40 years, 35% patients were in age range 41-50 years, 37% patients were in age range 51-60 years. Mean age was 52 years with SD ± 2.17. Sixty two percent patients were male while 38% patients were female. Moreover 32% patients with parotid gland swelling had malignancy of the parotid gland while 68% patients didn’t had malignancy.
CONCLUSION: Our study concludes that the frequency of malignancy in patients presented with parotid swelling was found to be 32%.
